Contents of the physical fitness test

The physical fitness test includes six disciplines, which you must all pass. The physical fitness test will be held in the Prison and Probation Service's training centre after the application period.

Bring proof of your identity (primarily a driver's license) and copies of the letters of reference and degree certificates mentioned in your application with you to the physical fitness test. Applicants take the physical fitness test at their own responsibility. Passing the test requires completing all parts of the test acceptably. Applicants who pass the physical fitness test will be invited to an aptitude test, and student selections will be made according to the total points from these two tests.

Types of physical fitness test

Standing long jump

  • Measuring explosive leg power and elastic strength as well as general fitness.
  • The subject leaps from a line marked on the floor to a padded area using a two-foot take-off and landing.
  • The better of two (2) jumps is recorded.

Pull-upp/pull down

  • Measuring arm and shoulder flexion muscle strength.
  • The subject performs either
a reverse-grip chin-up, with a straight body and a shoulder-width grip, with no swinging or other movements to gain momentum, or
a continuous reverse-grip pull-down to chin level, with a resistance equal to the subject’s own weight, a shoulder-width grip and a straight body.
  • The maximum resistance for men is 100 kilograms.
  • The resistance used for women is 70% of the subject’s own weight, a minimum of 40 kilograms and a maximum of 70 kilograms.

Trunk lift

  • Measuring back muscle strength.
  • The subject lies flat on a raised platform face down, with their arms to the sides and their fingers clasped behind their neck and their feet supported by the ankles (by an assistant). The subject lifts their upper body from the waist up until their upper body is raised slightly above the level of their lower body and then bends towards the floor until their forehead or elbows touch the padded mat.
  • Each subject is given 60 seconds to perform the test.

Abdominal crunch

  • Measuring abdominal muscle strength.
  • The subject lies on their back, with their fingers clasped behind their neck and their elbows pointing forward, with their knees at a 90-degree angle and their feet supported by the ankles (by an assistant). The subject sits up without using their elbows or the floor for momentum and takes their elbows up to their knees.
  • Each subject is given 60 seconds to perform the test.

Push-up

  • Measuring arm and shoulder extension muscle strength.
  • The subject lies flat on a mat face down, with their palms against the floor shoulder-width apart, with their fingers pointing forward and with their legs together. The subject extends their arms, keeping their body straight and rigid, and brings their body down until their chest touches the mat. Women perform the exercise with their knees on the floor.
  • Each subject is given 60 seconds to perform the test.

Shuttle run

  • Measuring speed endurance and agility.
  • The subject runs back and forth from one end of the room to the other (approximately 13 m) and touches a marker placed on the floor before each turn. A one-way trip (touching the list) is one trip in point calculation.
  • Each subject is given 120 seconds to perform the test.
