Structured studies and work-based learning

Most of the training consists of paid work-based learning carried out in prison. Our students complete the structured studies mainly at the Training Institute for Prison and Probation Service in Vantaa and partly online.
Structured studies
There are two structured study modules, which last a total of six (6) months. The structured studies include practical exercises and a wide range of theoretical studies, such as lectures, individual assignments, group work, and online lectures.
Students also complete structured study assignments during their work-based learning modules.
Work-based learning
Work-based learning modules last approximately ten (10) months in total. There are two modules, and the contents of different study modules are integrated into them. The Prison and Probation Service pays the students a salary during the work-based learning modules.
Goal-oriented, planned, and assessed work-based learning is carried out as part of practical tasks. The students complete the work-based learning modules required for the qualification at an assigned prison (rikosseuraamus.fi). We take into account students’ own preferences regarding the prison.
Supervised practical training in real learning environments, feedback, and constructive teaching and guidance discussions support the students’ professional development. The aim is that, after completing the qualification for supervision and guidance duties, graduates will have sufficient competence in the core areas of the prison and probation services to carry out effective work. In this way, they help support people serving prison sentences or community sanctions on their path towards a life free from crime.
